Bourbon Country Three

Same day, just leaving Woodford Reserve. I tried to get Rob to help me and James roll one of these out to the truck. It wasn't like he didn't have the room. But noooo. He said the Pappy Patrol was activated and in plain clothes. I did not believe him.

It was getting past 3p.m. and we needed to refuel. Where would one go? Well, if you are savvy, it's a no-brainer:

Just head on out Old Frankfort Pike. There it is!!!! And what to order? Again, a no-brainer:

Delish, am I right? The Big Brown Burger!

Next up... I really wanted James to experience Kentucky. While I've not been to the Derby, I have been to horse country - once to check up on a trotter my dad co-owned, Orcas Flight. He was wintering near Lexington. The horse. My dad, not. I also went to Keeneland with Linda one time.

So Rob and Wynee decided to do it up right. Keeneland it is!!

Like football games in the South, people dress for the track. Here's a few youth hanging out on the balcony overlooking the paddock area (you can see the paddock in the monitor, upper left:

I lost a bundle. I think $15. James was much better, and he and Rob and Wynee won big in the 8th when they bet on the horse that placed. This was a previous race but shares the venue in all its glory:

The next stop on the whirlwind tour... well, it was around 6p.m., and why not drop in on cousin Donna Hecker? It just so happens she manages the Holly Hill Inn in Midway. Between Lexington and Frankfort. Guess how far from either? Ok that's an easy one.

Way back in the day, my dad was superintendent of Midway Schools. I'm not sure there should have been, or was,  a plural there.

Anyway, Holly Hill has over 50 bourbons on their list. Which did we have? I haven't a clue. Donna, do you remember? James? Rob? Wynee? Somebody!!!! ????

While enjoying the bourbon, a celebrity arrived for dinner. Late 70s, proper Southern belle... turns out she owned the horse our party had won big on in the eighth! Amazing!!! We got to meet her and congratulate her. Truly a unique experience.

We decided, since Wynee had a family function to attend, to head back to Frankfort so she could do her thing. Rob, James and I had another target in mind:

Bourbon on Main! Frankfort, downtown. Actually, right on the river too. We eyed up a property in the area for James to set up a studio. We decided the market would be slightly different from Chicago, so maybe not. Anyway, there's Rob and James just right of center.

That dinner closed out our amazing first tour day. Yes I had the hot thing on the menu - excellent and I lived to type these very words!

We repaired to Rob and Wynee's for the evening, fixing a glitch on James's iPhone and watching an MSU football game on my tablet. Oh, yeah. Sippin' Woodford Reserve. And a win on the road at Minnesota.

What could be better?

Well, there's still the story of tomorrow... stay tuned!
